The bioactive compounds in turmeric consist mainly of curcuminoids and terpenoids. These compounds help turmeric boost the immune system. Curcumin is the major curcuminoid found in turmeric, and has been studied extensively for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also responsible for giving haldi its golden yellow colour. Terpenoids are a class of organic compounds that offer a range of health benefits such as antibacterial, antiviral and antidepressant effects.

Turmeric for Immunity

Numerous studies have been conducted, examining the benefits of turmeric and the immune system. Long-term low-level inflammation has been linked to a variety of degenerative conditions like arthritis, Alzheimer’s and even cancer. The benefits of curcumin for the immune system largely revolve around its potent anti-inflammatory properties.

In recent years, antioxidants have gained a lot of buzz as we learned the connection between oxidative damage and degenerative diseases. The benefits of curcumin in immune system function extend to its antioxidant function. Studies have shown that curcumin is extremely effective at scavenging free radicals, thereby preventing oxidative damage.

One study has shown that turmeric is good for the immune system as it may have cancer-preventing effects. This study was conducted on men with colon lesions that could possibly turn cancerous. For a period of 1 month, 4 grams of curcumin was taken daily and a 40% reduction in lesions was observed.

Make the most of the natural goodness of turmeric - immune system improvement isn’t the only benefit it has to offer. It has also been proven to have anti-ageing benefits.
