Ten healthy offerings for the ten days of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of India’s most vibrant festivals. Just say the name, and you can almost smell the sweet delicacies that are made during this festive season. While no Indian festival is complete without sweets, they have a special significance during the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. It is believed that Lord Ganesha is especially fond of sweets, which is why people spend hours preparing his favourite dishes and offering these delicacies to him as prasad.

Here are ten offerings that will make your Ganesh Chaturthi spread healthy as well as delectable:

1. Modak Eat Breakfast
Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet dumplings are one of the most popular prasad item amongst people too. The soft outer shell is made from rice flour, while the filling consists of coconut and jaggery. The most common and healthier option is to steam modaks instead of frying them. This ensures lesser calories while maintaining the authenticity of the dish.

2. Puran Poli
This is a traditional Maharashtrian dish, which is also a popular Ganapati prasad item. It is cooked just like a paratha, but the stuffing consists of a sweet mixture of jaggery, ghee, and toor or chana dal, which is an excellent source of protein and fibre. Try Tata Sampann dals which are cleaner and purer, along with being unpolished. This helps preserve natural nutrition in the dal. Many people opt to make the poli (flat bread) with whole wheat flour instead of maida, which makes it an even healthier option.

3. Rajgira Laddoo
It is made from amaranth seeds and jaggery syrup. Amaranth, also known as rajgira, is a healthy grain that provides a good amount of calcium, protein, vitamin A, B, and C. It is a good source of fibre, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. These laddoos are a delicious and gluten-free offering made to Lord Ganesha during this festive season, prepared by adding popped rajgira seeds to the jaggery paste when it’s heated.

4. Rava ladoo
It is a delicious Ganpati sweet prepared with coconut, ghee, and semolina or rava, which makes it high on protein, vitamin B3, magnesium, and phosphorus. Semolina contains protein and fibre, both of which slow digestion and increase feelings of fullness between meals. It is made by roasting rawa until it turns brown and aromatic. Instead of using sugar, the rawa can be blended with dates, to make a sweet and healthy paste. After this it is mixed with coconut, so that it can eventually turn it into a melt-in the-mouth delicacy.

5. Shrikhand Eat Breakfast
Made with hung curd and sugar, Shrikhand Poori provides a healthy dose of essential fats and protein. For flavouring, cardamom and saffron are used. It is usually topped with nuts, which provide heart-healthy fats that make this dessert even healthier.

6. Sing paak
This is a Gujarati sweet usually made with peanuts and sugar, but as a healthy alternative, sugar can be replaced with jaggery. Peanuts are packed with healthy fats and high-quality protein. They are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals like biotin, copper, niacin, folate, manganese, vitamin E, thiamine, phosphorus and magnesium.

The peanuts are roasted and ground into a paste, and then cooked along with crushed jaggery, ghee, and cardamom powder, to arrive at these flavourful barfis that are quite popular during the Ganesha festival.

7. Coconut barfi
This easy and delicious sweet is made using by mixing coconut and condensed milk, and cooking on medium flame until a thick, paste-like consistency is achieved. It is flavoured using cardamom, and topped with nuts. The coconut and nuts provide not just a good dose of healthy fats, but also proteins.

8. Banana SheeraEat Breakfast
This easy and delicious sweet is made using by mixing coconut and condensed milk, and cooking on medium flame until a thick, paste-like consistency is achieved. It is flavoured using cardamom, and topped with nuts. The coconut and nuts provide not just a good dose of healthy fats, but also proteins.

9. Khoya Satori
Satori is another Maharashtrian flat bread which is made during festivals. It is rich in texture and flavour. The dough is made from besan, rawa, and flour, while the filling is made from semolina and khoya. Besan is rich in protein while semolina is a good source of folate and iron. Cardamom is also used for flavouring. The filling sometimes also contains powdered nuts or dates.

10. Payasam
This Ganpati prasad and well-known sweet dish made from moong dal, coconut milk, jaggery, and cardamom is loaded with nutrients. Moong dal provides a healthy dosage of fibre, zinc, and protein, while coconut is a healthy fat. It can be prepared in a matter of minutes, by cooking together milk, sugar, and cardamom powder until it forms a creamy paste. Instead of sugar, a natural sweetener - like Tata Nx Zero Sugar - can be used to make a healthier dish. Garnish this with cashew nuts and raisins before serving.
