Clinical data shows that sore throats are one of the most common ailments, especially when the weather changes. This trouble especially bothers individuals who use their throat a lot as part of their occupation – teachers, singers, and speakers. An itchy throat, hoarseness, burning, pain and an altered timbre of voice are quite troublesome, particularly when accompanied by symptoms of a cold, cough and breathing difficulty. In fact, a sore throat can make you out-and-out miserable! Fortunately, you can manage a sore throat successfully at home - slow down, care for yourself and relieve the soreness.

Self care for a sore throat

These 3 formidable home remedies are quick-acting and can help you bounce back!

Self care for a sore throat
  • Salt water

Warm salt-water gargles soothe an irritated, scratchy throat almost instantly! Salt drives out the mucus from the inflamed tissue and allays the discomfort and pain. Importantly, salt is a powerful anti-bacterial and battles infections effectively too. Repeat the salt gargles 5 to 7 times through the day for speedy results. Make sure you use a pure salt such as Tata Salt to ensure these benefits.

  • Honey

Warm water with a spoonful of honey is another potent home remedy. It soothes your irritated throat and keeps you hydrated. Honey functions as an effectual cough suppressant and is by far more beneficial than over-the-counter drugs. Have 3 glasses of warm water with honey daily, it can help you keep your throat healthy.

  • Ginger pepper lemon and honey kadha

This homemade decoction is extremely effective and helps you battle flu-like symptoms quickly. In a bowl of water, add grated ginger and coarsely pounded pepper, and boil it well. Strain and add liberal amounts of lemon juice and a generous dollop of honey. The gingerols in ginger fight the inflammation and soreness, pepper keeps you warm, lemon pumps large amounts of vitamin C into the body, while honey soothes the irritated throat. Have piping hot, twice a day, for optimal and speedy results.

Another vital aspect to accelerating healing of a sore throat is staying well hydrated; it most definitely hastens recovery. When the body is adequately hydrated, it produces enough mucus and saliva to keep your throat naturally lubricated and thus thwarts soreness. Make sure you have plenty of water and fluids all day long. Water is the most optimal choice, as are warm teas and strengthening soups. Furthermore, steer clear of caffeine and alcohol, as they tend to dehydrate you. Also, step up your vitamin C intake to facilitate rapid return to health.
