Avoid gaining seasonal weight

Depending upon your personality, social life and where you live, there is a chance that you might be gaining weight at a particular time of the year. Many of us crave sugary and indulgent things in winter. While many others, tend to overdo energy drinks and let go of diets during summer months. Monsoon seasons makes it difficult to step out. Extreme weather also discourages many from exercising regularly. While some seasonal food is extremely delicious and nutritious, overeating some seasonal produce can also lead to weight gain.

Irrespective of your personality and season of concern, it is possible to avoid this periodic weight gain.

Be aware of sugar

Whether it is hot chocolate in winters or lemonade in summers, sugar creeps into our diet through a lot of seasonal drinks. These drinks are comforting and refreshing which increases their appeal. While staying hydrated and consuming weather appropriate drinks is important in every season, make sure you are aware of the calories and sugar content of each drink. Substitute sugary drinks with coconut water, fruit infused water, vegetable juices or hot chocolate with stevia. Sugar can be replaced with a natural stevia based sweetener such as Tata Nx Zero Sugar to avoid putting on extra calories at any time of the year.

Exercise

Be committed to exercise

As the weather changes, it can be too hot or too cold to go for a run or to the gym. This leads many of us to avoid exercising altogether. Instead of sticking to one kind of exercise, try different regimes for different weather. Swimming can be a great activity during summer months. While, indoor exercise routines such as yoga, Zumba, gym, etc. are great for the months of winter and monsoon. Different types of exercise can also help you avoid exercise plateau and help you keep your progress consistent.

Be conscious of what you eat

Seasonal treats are many and extremely irresistible. Aamras in summers, gajar ka halwa in winter, Diwali snacks and sweets, iftar treats, summer coolers, this list can go on. While we consume these with much delight, it is important to remember that seasonal foods also contribute to our daily intake of calories and nutrition. It is an absolute must to include seasonal food in your diet as it satisfies nutritional requirement of our bodies in that season. But at the same time, it is crucial to know what else is part of the food you eat. If it is a sweet dish, use natural, low calorie sweeteners instead of sugar. For savoury food, exercise portion control to stick to your everyday caloric goals.

Be aware of portion sizes

A well advocated method of staying healthy is practicing portion control. This can help you lose weight as well as eat healthy during the times when you tend to put on weight. Increased portion sizes are known contribute to overeating and unwanted weight gain. Switch to using smaller plates or glasses; this can help you lower the amount of food and drinks that you consume. This will also allow you to indulge while being careful about how much you have eaten. During each meal, fill half of your plate with colorful food items such as salads and fruits. Jotting down your total calorie intake can also help you increase awareness of what you consume. This can motivate you to make healthier choices and reduce your chances of overeating.

Be prepared 

It could be party season or summer vacations, many such changes to our daily routines throw us off our health journeys. Just as you would prepare for your daily meals, plan your meals and snacks for vacation days and parties as well. This doesn’t have to mean you don’t have any fun, it just means that you should account for the indulgences and make smarter choices while you have fun. For example – Instead of processed food snacks, opt for local fruits while you travel to a new destination. At parties, chose baked or grilled food items over fried dishes and avoid fattening foods.

There are many reasons for seasonal weight gain. It is important to be committed to staying healthy and sticking to your health goals through all seasons to avoid this.
